Stucco is not drywall and it does not take paint the same way. It is alkaline, it is porous, and it holds moisture inside the wall and releases it slowly. Paint the wrong product onto it and you do not get a color change, you get a film that traps that moisture against the substrate. Within two or three NYC winters it blisters and peels in sheets, and removing failed paint off textured stucco costs more than the paint job did.
That is why the product matters more than the brand. Stucco wants a breathable masonry coating, either an elastomeric or a mineral silicate paint with a high perm rating, so vapor can still leave the wall. A standard acrylic house paint seals it. On a Brooklyn row house where the only drying path is outward, sealing the wall is how you end up with efflorescence, bubbling and eventually spalling.
Timing is the second half of it. Fresh stucco has to cure before it can be painted, generally 28 days for a three coat system, and painting it early locks alkalinity into the surface and burns the color out unevenly. On repairs we wait, and if a client needs it faster we use a product rated for green stucco rather than pretending the wait does not matter.
Prep is where most of the real labor goes and where cheap jobs cut. The wall gets washed, biological growth killed rather than just rinsed, cracks cut out and filled, chalking surfaces stabilized with a masonry conditioner, and anything previously coated tested for adhesion. We check for a prior elastomeric layer specifically, because a new coating over a failing one fails with it.
